The idea of wearing braces as an adult 10 years ago was almost completely unheard of. If you didn’t have orthodontic treatment as a child, you’d missed the boat. This meant that many people missed out on the benefits of wearing braces altogether. Fast-forward to the present and thanks in large part to the quality and affordability of clear braces more and more of us are choosing this orthodontic treatment.

Why consider braces as an adult?

The most obvious reason to get braces as an adult is to give yourself straighter teeth. In a 2016 study, Invisalign and Harris Poll revealed that nine in ten US adults who had undergone teeth-straightening felt that having straight teeth was important to their confidence. What’s more, 29% said having their teeth straightened helped them to achieve a personal goal. There are other benefits too.

It could improve your oral healthcare regime

It can be harder to clean crooked teeth, as there are likely to be more hard-to-reach spots in your mouth. This can result in greater build-up of bacteria and plaque, and therefore increase the risk of tooth decay, gum inflammation and gum disease (the number one cause of tooth loss).

It could save you money in the long run

This might sound counterintuitive but choosing teeth straightening with adult braces or clear aligners could actually save you money in the long term. Given the benefits to oral health, straight teeth could reduce the need for fillings, periodontal care and tooth wear treatments in the future.

The benefits of clear braces for adults

Invisalign clear braces are an affordable option for many patients and advances in technology mean they can be as effective as traditional orthodontic treatments. Which makes it possible to achieve your perfect smile without the aesthetic implications of traditional braces and a “metal mouth” look.

The Invisalign treatment plan

Once you and your Bow House dentist determine that Invisalign is right for your needs, they will develop a detailed treatment plan from which your bespoke, clear aligners will be made to order.

The impressions of your teeth will be digitised in order for your dentist to work with a computerised 3D image of your teeth which will plan your tooth movements throughout your treatment timeline. This means you will be able to see a virtual representation of your teeth before, during, and after treatment.

Bespoke clear aligners

Once you have agreed to your treatment plan, a series of clear aligners will be custom-made for you, each of which have to be worn for approximately two weeks before you switch to the next aligner. While the number of aligners varies case by case, a full treatment typically includes 18-36 aligners for both the upper and lower teeth which will take approximately 9-18 months.

The clear aligners should be worn day and night, except when eating, brushing or flossing teeth in order to complete your treatment in the timeline. You’ll have reviews every 4-6 weeks to monitor your progress and to receive your next aligner in the series.
